Alejandra is a visual artist from Monterrey, Mexico. She received her BA from McGill University in 2016 and continued her education by studying Art Research at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Her first solo show titled ‘El Huitlacoche y otras pasiones’ took place at EINA Espai Barra de Ferro, Barcelona in 2018. Alejandra is currently an MFA candidate in the Visual Art program at the University of British Columbia. She has had multiple collective art shows, including the VI Muestra Iberoamericana de Arte Miniatura y de Pequeño Formato at Museo El Centenario, where one of her pieces received an honorable mention. Her artwork has been exhibited locally in Museo Ciudad Guadalupe, Museo del Antiguo Palacio in García, Casa de la Cultura San Pedro, and in the Architecture Faculty of the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon; and internationally at Clio Art Fair in the United States; at the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, Centre A, Galerie Erga, and The Glassdoor Gallery in Canada; and Piramidón Centre d’Art Contemporani, Cercle Artistic de Sant Lluc, and EINA Barra de Ferro in Spain.
In her recent work, she reflects on the social practices of her natal city, Monterrey: the permanence of specific traditions throughout the decades and the distorted notions of personal fulfillment that accompany them. With her paintings, she questions the priorities and mentality of most citizens, the stigmatization of certain conducts, the importance of appearances, and the obsession with material wealth. She seeks to explore the banalities and the underlying cynicism of Monterrey lifestyle. Some of her main artistic influences include Kerry James Marshall, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, and David Salle.
*Alejandra Morales es una artista visual de Monterrey, México. Ella se graduó en el 2016 con un Bachillerato de Arte enfocado en Liberal Arts en McGill University, en Montreal, Canadá. Posteriormente, realizó un posgrado en Investigación en Arte y Diseño en la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona. Actualmente, Alejandra se encuentra cursando la Maestría en Bellas Artes en la Universidad de British Columbia en Vancouver. Su primera exposición individual, 'El Huitlacoche y otras pasiones', se llevó a cabo en EINA Espai Barra de Ferro, Barcelona en el 2018. Alejandra ha participado en numerosas exposiciones colectivas incluyendo la VI Muestra Iberoamericana de Arte Miniatura y de Pequeño Formato en el Museo El Centenario, en la cual una de sus piezas recibió una mención honorífica. A su vez, ha expuesto localmente en el Museo Ciudad Guadalupe, en el Museo del Antiguo Palacio en García, en la Casa de la Cultura de San Pedro y en la Facultad de Arquitectura de la UANL; así como internacionalmente en Clio Art Fair en los Estados Unidos; en la Galería de Arte Morris y Helen Belkin, Centre A, Galerie Erga y The Glassdoor Gallery en Canadá; y en Piramidón Centre d’Art Contemporani, Cercle Artistic de Sant Lluc y EINA Barra de Ferro en España.
Su trabajo reciente surge de una reflexión sobre las prácticas sociales de su ciudad: la permanencia de algunas costumbres y las ideas sesgadas del éxito. A través de su obra, ella cuestiona las prioridades de los regios, la estigmatización de ciertas conductas, las apariencias y la obsesión con las posesiones materiales. Con ello, busca explorar la banalidad, el mal gusto y el cinismo. Algunos de sus referentes pictóricos son Kerry James Marshall, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye y David Salle.
